“Diakonia” Part 3

Kim and Marvin are the last two deacons to be ordained in San Pedro Cathedral on September 3.

It all started with the desire to wear the vestments of a mass server and the post celebration delights that go with them some lively socialization. Gradually, with the help of the Holy Spirit, Rev. Mark Kim’s intentions were purified. This graduated into an intention that would lead him along a path to study at the University of Santo Tomas for priesthood. After a glitch in the final exam, he was able to fulfill all the requirements and thereafter proceeded to take Canon Law. Rev. Mark Kim is unique in his batch of deacons when it comes to places of studies and discernment. His discernment even took him to Kenya with the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostle. His two years of regency was followed by a year working at the Holy Cross College, and finally hopping from Babak, Samal on to Baliok, Toril and finally to Malabog, north of this city.

In the interview with DCHerald, Rev. Mark Kim revealed his doubts and difficulties that went with his formation. He even had thoughts of quitting, but all the while remembering some people who influenced him in the past such as the priest who invited him to Kenya and Fr. Rolando Manreza. Obviously, the Lord crafted his plans involving others to shape the events in his life. In the end, surprise of all surprises, his name came out in the roster of the deacons for ordination. Given a chance, Rev. Mark Kim wishes to work in the hinterlands with Lumads.

Growing up from a typical faithful Catholic family, Reverend Marvin del Campo of San Antonio de Padua Parish of Agdao early on knew the basic vocal prayers and was active in the liturgical activities in the parish level as well as in their GKK.

With a magnanimous heart, he took and passed the exams of the Congregation of Society of Divine Vocations (S.D.V.). Discovering his charism during his regency led him to the diocesan seminary. Passing the entrance exams, again, for Rev. Marvin is God’s sign of approval. Soon, a dark cloud hovered during his regency and beyond as he was weighed down by his genuine concern for the welfare of his parents. Being the only child, he felt obliged out of love and responsibility to see through the care of his aging parents. Moving on, Rev. Marvin trusted God who always was there ever-faithful to His promises. This episode of trial led Rev. Marvin to desire to become ever a downright family man – that he really is called to be a priest in the greater family of God.
