Christ the King

Christ is King of Kings

Christ the KingThis Sunday the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King which is also known as Feast of Christ the King. The Church would want to make it clear that Christ kingship is not a political figure because His kingdom is not of this world but in the world to come. On the other hand, Christ, as the son of God and king, shares in the dominion of God over the world and that his kingship is established in the hearts of the believers. For the kingship of Christ in this world is exercised in the gathering, governance, protection and perfecting of his church.

In perfecting His church God established the kingdom of God in the heart of every believer by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit and it is both present and future reality.

Establishing God’s kingdom in our hearts means that we will often be broken and that we will often be hurt. But we are told that “The Lord is close to the broken hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed, he will save (Psalm 34:18). Therefore, it is better to have a broken heart than a hard one because as King, Christ must reign in our wills which should obey the laws and precepts of God. He must reign in our hearts, which should spurn evil desires and love God above all things, and cleave to him alone. He must reign in our bodies and in every aspect of our physical self, which should serve as instruments for the interior sanctification of our souls, or to use the words of the Apostle Paul, as instruments of justice unto God.

Ever since in the old testament Israel has been looking for a king who will take them out of captivity and reestablish kingdom rule. But this was worldly things. Jesus is establishing a heavenly kingdom in our hearts to forever reign there as the ultimate King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
