Duc in Altum
Duc in altum means “go out into the deep” or “draw into the deep”.
Tomorrow, January 28, the Church honors St. Thomas Aquinas who is known to be the Patron of Catholic schools, colleges and universities, philosophers, theologians and booksellers. Having written a lot of books, this “Angelic Doctor” has contributed so much in deepening our Faith.
In the midst of the rapid discovery of communications technology, anybody can almost do research and know facts from the internet. The truth content of formation and education of the young today poses a great challenge to “go out into the deep” because the language of the present world needs to be maximized in order to understand the lofty and the noble works of great doctors like St. Therese of Avila so that our Faith anchored on the Bible, tradition and magisterium will continue “to catch fishes in the ocean.” Mentors of the faith need to be rediscovered.
We are exhorted to go out into the deep in our pursuit for the total development of the human person. The opportunity offered by the wonderful and new means of technology calls us to inject the truth and provide quality content of our faith as laid down by great teachers, like St. Thomas. Professors, teachers, catechists and parents must make good use of the scholarly works of those who have gone ahead of us and allow the faith to be tangible in our daily experiences.
St. Thomas, pray for us!
