church stand on divorce immutable

No to divorce

Saying that the introduction of the Divorce Law is an easier way for the dissolution of marriage in the Philippines, a group of lay faithful is opposing divorce in the country.

The Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas, in their statement dubbed “Marriage and Family is a Gift” said that divorce should not be allowed in the Philippines.

“We should learn from the experience of other countries who have a Divorce Law where families have not been strengthened and as a result, causing a lot of problems to the deserted spouse and their children,” they said in a statement signed by their president Rouquel Ponte.

The group also highlighted the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church 2385:

“Divorce is immoral also because it introduces disorder into the family and into society. This disorder brings grave harm to the deserted spouse, to children traumatized by the separation of their parents and often torn between them, and because of its contagious effect which makes it truly a plague on society.”

The group also echoed the teachings of the Church about the sanctity of marriage.

“We firmly believe that the Family is a Gift from God and Marriage is a Sacred Bond instituted by the Church. It is our hope, therefore, that the Philippines shall forever stand as a beacon of hope for the family and society,” it added.

The group also enjoined to help Filipinos especially those suffering from failing marriages through the support of Family Life organizations, saying they should seek them out and accompany them with helpful interventions like education, formation and accompaniment.

They also guarantee their support to promote the values of life-long commitment and steadfast love.
