Palm Sunday

On Palm Sunday, we display, not wave, our palms.

No, the gospels do not say, the people welcome Jesus entering Jerusalem by waving palms. Instead of waving, they display the palms on the ground for Jesus’s riding ass to walk on (Mark 11, 8). This has deep symbolism.

The palms we hold symbolize our heart’s intentions and concerns. Our Lord went to Jerusalem to suffer and die and rise again to new life. We display on the road our desire, symbolized by the palms, to follow Jesus, to die to our sins, and rise to begin a new outlook and type of Christian life.
