Feed My Sheep

(Homily of Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., Archbishop of Davao during the Presbyteral Ordination of Rev. Oliver Alidon Ganas at Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Calinan, Davao City last May 22, 2023.)

Unang Pamalandong uban kang Rev. Oliver, ang atong assembly with the lay faithful, religious ug mga pari is quite a unique picture of the Church. A unique manifestation, pagpadayag sa atong pagkasimbahan. Ania kita ug kompleto kita in that sense. Ang tono sa atong pagtapaok karon tono sa kalipay because once more today in this special assembly niining Santos nga Misa, niining liturhiya sa ordination, we are reminded that ang simbahan pinalangga sa Diyos. Matod pa sa dokumento sa kanhing Santo Papa, St. John Paul II, “Pastores Dabo Vobis”, iyang gikuha ang usa ka linya sa Old Testament – “Ang Diyos kanunay magbantay ug mag-atiman kanato. Hatagan ko kamo ug magbalantay”. Pinangga gyud kita sa Diyos. Ug salamat gayud kay nahimo kitang dako nga seminary, a seedbed nga gitanom ang liso sa bokasyon diha sa kasing-kasing ni Oliver. Salamat kay kitang tanan, with a special role of the seminary, mitabang kita nga si Oliver mapatubo niya ang maong liso sa bokasyon. Usa kini ka kasinatian nga palangga gyud kita sa Diyos kay tagaan kita kanunay ug magbalantay o shepherd and we humbly thank him kay paghatag niya sa liso nga mahimong shepherd, mitabang kita nga hangtud karon, si Oliver malig-on, masigurado siya sa maong tawag sa pagkapari. Mao ni ang hinungdan nga nalipay kita kay gikuhit ka sa Diyos, ang tuburan sa kalipay, nga nag inspire namong tanan nga mututok uban kanimo nga ang maong gasa nga gihatag kanimo sa Diyos nga mulambo ug ania kita aron saulogon ang sakramento sa pagkapari nga imong pagadawaton Oliver. Malipayon nga simbahan nga nagkapundok karong adlawa.

Nindot kayo ang Parokya nga himuon kang pari karon kay Parokya of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. What a beautiful name of the parish. When you become a priest, nothing more, nothing less in God’s own reasoning, mind and design nasayod ako nga sa pag-ordain nimo, you will carry your heart with great prayer, very close, very identical to the heart of Jesus. You will show, together with our prayers, the true nature of mercy, love and compassion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Mao ni ang gi-ingon sa atong Ebanghelyo karon, magbaton ka sa kasingkasing ni Kristo as priest-“feed my sheep, feed my lambs”- because you have the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Therefore Oliver, the memory of Jesus, the Sacred Heart of Jesus ug pag-offer sa misa sa Eucharist and another translation sa feed my sheep is washing of the feet. Ang picture sa pagkaon nindot, ang picture sa Sacred Heart of Jesus nindot pero consider the picture of washing of the feet – abog, baho, hugaw – that is the work of a slave, of a servant but just as the same feed my sheep, being a priest holding a heart closer to Jesus, you are also given the grace and the mandate to wash the feet of God’s people. Oliver grabe kini nga order but on your own you know, we know, impossible. That is why a laying-on of hands is simply a nicely, beautifully, wonderfully sign that now the grace of the Lord is upon you to do this seemingly impossible feeding the sheep, washing the feet of our people.
