Celebrating the Family

Filipinos, typically having close family ties, have an intimate relationship with the Holy Family. We see our own families linked to the first family that we do emulate. As the year 2023 comes to a close, we reflect and contemplate on the things and events we have experienced. What have we done to preserve our family? Have we actively engaged with them or have we not given them our precious time?

As the year concludes, we can look at the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as they fulfill their individual roles in the plan of salvation. Although what they have then was far different from what we experience now, the basic values of obedience and faithfulness still serve as the strongest foundation of a family.

On this feast of the Holy Family, let us come together in prayer, thanking the Lord for gifting us with families, although imperfect, yet beautifully woven to help us build a strong character.

What may be the simplest way to celebrate this holy feast?

  • Pray – as what is said, the family that prays together, stays together. What better way to celebrate than to attend mass and thank God for all the blessings and graces he has showered us with? As we pray, we not only ask for what we want, but rather we pray that our plans are in accordance with his divine will. We also ask the intercession of Mary and Joseph that we become like them not only becoming loving members of the family, but obedient sons and daughters of God.
  • Spend Quality Time – so much to do, so little time. During these holidays, no matter how busy we are, we make sure that we visit our loved ones and spend time talking to them and becoming present. We also show them our kindness as we show our concern while asking how they are. Most of the time it’s not about the gifts that we give but the presence we share.
  • Create Memories – we know how taking photos and videos have become a fad in this generation, why not take some with family? These are precious moments which we will treasure forever.

As we try doing all of these things, we remember that no family is perfect, we have different characters, opinions and priorities. But we do also have to remember that we are tied not only by blood, but by heart. As we celebrate this feast of the Holy Family, may we grow more patient with one another and see each other as earthen vessels of the Holy Spirit still shaped to become beautiful offerings to the Lord.
