Stupid Teen-agers

Mr. Antonio Lopez serves as the editor-in-chief of a business magazine, a PhilStar newspaper columnist, and a magna cum laude graduate in journalism from the University of Santo Tomas (U.S.T.). In his PhilStar column on December 21, he expressed his thoughts about Filipino 15-year-olds, stating that they are among the least proficient teenagers globally in science, math, and reading. He characterized them as being in the lower echelons of the global intellectual totem pole.

In his discussion of the 2022 test results where 81 nations participated, Mr. Lopez addressed the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022. He lauded those who performed well in the tests and, in a direct address, acknowledged their intellectual prowess.

However, a concern arises regarding the choice of language used in describing those who may not have excelled academically. Labeling Filipino students as “stupid” may come across as hurtful to the 110 million Filipinos striving daily to provide for their families and secure better opportunities through education. Mr. Lopez is reminded of the importance of empathy, considering the struggles of individuals who may not be as privileged as he is.

It is suggested that Mr. Lopez could express his concerns in a more considerate manner, avoiding terms that may demean or belittle. For instance, framing the discussion around the challenges faced by Filipino students in the global educational landscape, without resorting to negative labels, would foster a more constructive dialogue.

Furthermore, acknowledging the difficulties faced by families and offering words of hope and encouragement could contribute positively to the conversation. Rather than presenting the situation as a burden, Mr. Lopez might consider highlighting the resilience and determination of Filipino families, urging them to persevere with faith and optimism.

Ultimately, Mr. Lopez is encouraged to approach these sensitive topics with a sense of decency and respect for the diverse experiences of the Filipino population. It is suggested that he reflect on the potential impact of his words on those who may not share his academic achievements. The hope is for a more compassionate and uplifting discourse that recognizes the challenges faced by many and offers words of encouragement for a brighter future.

Wishing Mr. Antonio Lopez a Happy New Year.
