Self-Love

February 14 is an important day for us Catholics since it’s Ash Wednesday and it signifies the start of the Lenten Season. We are obliged to attend the Holy Mass on that day. The imposition of ashes on our foreheads will remind us that from dust we came and to dust we shall return. Before that happens, we still have time to repent for all our sins and to thank Jesus for his gift of salvation.

On the other hand, the secular world would be celebrating Valentine’s Day on February 14. Many would be busy thinking of ways on how to surprise their loved ones. For those who are single and broken-hearted it’s time to pamper yourself. Self-love is the key!

Be kinder to yourself. This is what I learned from one of the featured articles in my Mercury Drug 2021 Suki Day Book Journal entitled Ascend From the Negativity. It says, show yourself the same grace and goodness you would show to a friend in need.

Let me share with you below other insights I gathered on said article that would help us in giving ourselves some love and affection:

Allow your mind to rest. Full and meaningful sleep is crucial in maintaining your mental health and can aid in alleviating stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Focus in what you can control. Learn to devote your energy into things you have actual power and influence over to help reduce anxiety.

Stop the comparisons. Envy is the leading cause of low self-confidence. Remember that your personal growth is not a race and that life isn’t a competition.

Don’t be afraid to fail and try again. Don’t focus on the missteps in your journey to better yourself, be grateful instead that you chose to take this journey in the first place.

Moreover, as loving ourselves before others is good for our physical and mental health, it’s nice to treat ourselves once in a while to a good meal. Have a massage. Watch good movies. Travel to places we’ve never been. Read a good book.

Lord, thank you for the gift of life. We offer ourselves to you. Use us to share your goodness. As we love ourselves, may it set the standard on how we love others too. Amen.

“The second most important commandment is like it: Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” – Matthew 22:38
