Celebration of the Word of God, Sacramental Life, and Spiritual Growth

The Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Archdiocese of Davao this year centers on the Word of God as the sub-theme above says. This is spearheaded by the Archdiocesan Liturgical Center with Fr. Michael Ondras as Director.

First, we take the challenge of Verbum Domini 73: “Along these lines the Synod called for a particular pastoral commitment to emphasizing the centrality of the word of God in the Church’s life, and recommended a greater “biblical apostolate”, not alongside other forms of pastoral work, but as a means of letting the Bible inspire all pastoral work”.” The Word of God should be the backbone and not only an option or an addition in any pastoral activity.

Second, Verbum Domini 104 says, “Concern for young people calls for courage and clarity in the message we proclaim; we need to help young people to gain confidence and familiarity with sacred Scripture so it can become a compass pointing out the path to follow.” The Word of God must lead the way to eternal life for all of us especially for the young today who are searching for meaning in life. By allowing the young to take part in the life and ministry of the Church, a true encounter with Christ, the Word-made-flesh must inspire the youth.

And third, Verbum Domini 113 emphasizes that “linked to the relationship between the word of God and culture is the need for a careful and intelligent use of the communications media, both old and new…. God’s word should resound not only in the print media, but in other forms of communication as well.” Where majority of the youth are today, that is, in the internet and social media, God’s Word must be made available to them. The Church should offer them opportunities to not only be the recipients of God’s Word using these media but become influencers themselves.
