Mary Will Accompany You
(An excerpt of the homily of the Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., during the Feast of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Rite of Admission to the Holy Orders and Enthronement of the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe last October 7, 2024 at San Pedro Cathedral.)
But why is it that she is a very powerful intercessor?
We see in the Gospel Reading today I believe one very good reason. Because the Blessed Mother, our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the same lady, our Lady of Guadalupe is a very good listener. She is a good listener; she listens to the Lord. Many voices in the world today, it’s difficult to choose, to hear, to listen to the particular voice of the Lord. In the Gospel today, Mary heard the voice of the Angel. Wala pa siya makapaminaw, how can she answer “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.” She was able to answer yes because she understood that this is the voice of God.”
But we move forward, also in the miracle of Cana, Mary was a very good observer, very good listener to those around her, to the family celebrating in Cana and she observed a very embarrassing situation that there is no more wine. Listening and observing to the situation, she was able to make a petition to the Lord: “They have no more wine.” The Lord answered so what, it’s not yet my time but Mary after having told Jesus what she saw, what she heard that there is no more wine, she said to the servants. “Do whatever she tells you.”
And then the third very dramatic at the foot of the Cross in Calvary she heard what her Son told her: “Behold your mother.” At the foot of the Calvary again she heard herself being declared as our Mother. So therefore, Mary is a great intercessor, and we can summarize, she intercedes for us because she is our mother. Our Lady of Guadalupe is our Mother, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is our Mother.
