Called to Serve: Embracing God’s Love at the Knights of the Altar Convention 2025
On Saturday, February 15, 2025, over 2,600 young altar servers gathered at the St. Francis Xavier College Seminary Gym for the Knights of the Altar Convention 2025. Altar servers from different parishes and schools across the Archdiocese of Davao came together to celebrate unity, faith, prayer, and hope. Dressed in colorful shirts, they were full of excitement and energy as they took part in this special event.
The theme of the convention, “Gitawag sa Pag-alagad nga Nagkahiusa Diha sa Pagtoo, Pag-ampo ug Paglaum” (“Called to Serve in Unity through Faith, Prayer, and Hope”), captured the spirit of the gathering. The event began with a Holy Mass, presided over by Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D. He warmly welcomed the altar servers, thanking them for their dedication to the Church. In his homily, Archbishop Valles spoke about the joy their service brings to the Church and the importance of the Eucharist. He encouraged them to stay committed to their calling and expressed hope that some might one day answer the call to the priesthood.
After the Mass, Fr. Dexter Veloso led an inspiring session for the altar servers. He reminded them of the true reason behind their service: “You serve because Jesus loves you.” His words helped them remember that their service is a response to God’s love.
The altar servers then took part in workshops on topics like human development, mental health, liturgy, servant leadership, and vocation. These sessions offered valuable lessons on how to grow in their roles as altar servers and in their personal lives.
The afternoon was filled with fun and friendly competition during sports and games. The activities helped the altar servers’ bond, building friendships and teamwork.
The day may have been hectic, but it was filled with inspiration and growth. The convention reminded the altar servers of the vital role they play in the Church, encouraging them to continue serving with faith and joy. It reinforced their commitment to prayer, service, and hope, leaving them motivated and inspired to carry forward their faith in their communities. (Sem. Roldan Baliano)
