Stories that Matter: Lessons from IAES’ 9th Lecture
The Institute of ASEAN-European Studies (IAES) hosted the 9th Ambassador’s Lecture Series on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, featuring a talk by Mr. Perry Paul Lamanilao, the Communications Manager at Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Philippines. Held at the 7th Floor Cross Theatre from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM, the event, titled “Laudate Deum in Action: Sharing Impact and Human-Interest Stories from the Ground,” resonated deeply with the audience.
Mr. Lamanilao, a seasoned journalist and communications professional, has over a decade of experience in crafting communication strategies that engage a wide range of stakeholders, including policymakers, government officials, and community members. As a Laudato Si Fellow and an alumnus of the Faith Communication in the Digital World Program at the Vatican, his insights into the role of storytelling for social change are deep. His work at CRS involves amplifying impactful human-interest stories that highlight the voices of the marginalized.
The theme of the event, emphasizing the importance of truthful and compassionate storytelling, was introduced by Mr. Rome Momo – Vice President for operations, who stressed the significance of integrity and truth in crafting narratives that can foster a more sustainable world.
Mr. Lamanilao shared five key lessons for effective storytelling:
- Details and context matter: Proper context prevents misinformation and strengthens credibility.
- Start with a question: Understand the “why” behind every story to connect with its core message.
- Creative content: Enhancing stories through creative presentations increases their impact.
- Stay truthful: Never fabricate details; authenticity is key.
- Safe and dignified storytelling: Present stories with respect, ensuring the safety and dignity of the subjects involved.
As one of the participants, I learned a great deal from Mr. Lamanilao’s talk. One key takeaway for me was the importance of ensuring the safety and dignity of the subjects we portray in our stories. In our pursuit of impactful narratives, it is essential to remember that behind every story is a real person, and it is our responsibility to present their experiences with care and respect. The event was a powerful reminder of the role storytelling plays in building compassion and promoting positive social change. (ACD CESO)
