To be nearer to the Lord and witnesses to His truth

(An excerpt of the homily of the Most Reverend Romulo G. Valles D.D. during the 42nd Parochial Fiesta of San Pablo Parish, Juna Subd, Matina, Davao City, January 25, 2025.)

Atong hinumdoman karon nga ang fiesta karon, ang trigger sa atong pagsimba, mao ang iyang conversion. Unsay gigamit sa bisaya? Ang verb sa Cebuano, “kabig”. Pero kanang verb nga “kabig” can be active and passive. Gikabig ni Romulo si Allan. Ang verb akoy nag act, nagkabig. Pero bantayan nato nga ang pagkakabig ni San Pablo, dili si San Pablo ang active. Naay unseen, active person, mikabig. Ang pagkakabig ni San Pablo, meaning who ang mikabig? Bantayi ang word ha, dili siya ang sikat but ang pagkakabig ni San Pablo, the conversion of Saint Paul, mao nay part diri sa misteryo, ang living message sa atong fiesta karon.

Unya mangutana kita sa atong fiesta karon, unsay tuyo aning tanan? Akong basahon ang opening prayer sa atong fiesta. Naa nako ang Cebuano pero kining missal nga Cebuano dapat na ning e-revamp, murag na stambay na nig dugay, from Latin to Cebuano, nakita na gyud nga usbonon, kay translation man ni, ang Cebuano. Pero moadto ko sa Cebuano kay mas han-ay, kay ang sentence daghag clauses, dili lang usa ka clause, ug kung dili maayo nimog han-ay medyo magubot.

Inogn sa Inengles, “O God, who taught the whole world through the preaching of the blessed apostle, Paul”. God ba, who by the way, midtudlo ka sa kalibutan, pinaagi kang San Pablo. O God, mao ni imong gibuhat pinaagi kang San Pablo, “draw us, we pray, nearer to you”. Kabiga kami. Mao ni ang kahulogan sa fiesta karon. Ang present message, O Lord today, San Pablo Parish, draw us nearer to you. Ang nearer mao nay second degree sa near. Sa ato pa, nagpasabot nga duol-duol ta. Pagkadimalas kung dili gyud ta near. Near, nearer, nearest. Ang pag-ampo nearer, naa puy near. Pero kung wala ta makapasar sa near, tua ta sa far, na dimalas ta.

“Draw us nearer to you”, how? “Through the example of him, whose conversion we celebrate today.” How do we draw near to you? Ah, through his example. “And make us witnesses to your truth in the world.” One is interior, the other one is pang exterior. Make us witnesses to the world, make us apostles like Saint Paul. But first of all make us nearer to you to see you clearly as Saint Paul was converted to the truth. He saw the Lord.
