Davao Stands Strong: 88th Araw ng Davao a Success Despite Political Turmoil

DAVAO CITY – The 88th Araw ng Davao celebration pushed through successfully on March 16, 2025, despite the recent arrest of former President and Davaoeño running mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte. The week-long festivities showcased the unwavering resilience and unity of Davaoeños, proving that even in tough times, the city’s spirit remains strong.

During the Aprobado sa Konseho: 20th City Council Media Forum, Hon. Al Ryan S. Alejandre and Hon. Lorenzo Benjamin Villafuerte acknowledged the challenges faced by the city following Duterte’s arrest. Despite this, they praised the successful turnout of the celebration, which featured 444 contingents participating in various events.

The celebration also included a Solidarity Walk and Peace Rally, where locals and visitors gathered to express their support for Duterte and their hope for peace. The strong presence of supporters highlighted the deep connection between Davaoeños and the former president.

However, the political turmoil did have an impact on the city’s tourism. According to Alejandre, several conventions and events were canceled, and some tourists chose to postpone their visits. Despite this, many visitors from other cities still came to Davao to show solidarity and participate in the celebration.

“Davao is at its lowest right now, but we are hopeful that things will get better soon,” Alejandre shared. He added that the Davao City Tourism Council remains optimistic about reaching their goal of 2.5 million tourists this year. Alejandre also mentioned that they are waiting for the upcoming midterm elections, believing it will play a role in stabilizing the city’s political climate and boosting tourism recovery.

Despite the hurdles, the success of the 88th Araw ng Dabaw proved that Davao stands strong, powered by its people united, resilient, and determined to move forward. (Mary Lyn Gapio and Rhenalyn Hernando | HCDC Interns | Photos: Araw ng Dabaw FB Page)
