Finding Courage in Christ
On February 22, 2025, the Family and Life Apostolate, in collaboration with the Davao Archdiocesan Youth Coordinating Apostolate, hosted Lakbay Buhay… Lakbay Pag-asa at St. John Paul II Hall, San Pablo Parish, Juna Subdivision, Matina, Davao City. This event, marking the conclusion of Pro-Life Month, focused on same-sex attraction and the Church’s compassionate response, offering hope and support to individuals struggling with such issues within the faith community.
Fr. Orlando Angelia, Director of the Family and Life Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Davao, began the gathering by discussing the Church’s stance on homosexuality. He emphasized the need for respect, compassion, and sensitivity towards individuals with same-sex attraction, referencing the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2358), which calls for avoiding unjust discrimination. While homosexual acts are condemned, Fr. Angelia stressed that the person is not. He encouraged the community to accept each other without judgment and to align their lives with God’s will to find freedom and peace.
The event continued with Mr. Marko Jay Weling, president of Courage Philippines, an international apostolate offering spiritual support for individuals with same-sex attraction. Courage, founded in New York and now present in 16 countries, helps individuals pursue chastity in line with Catholic teachings. Marko expressed hope for a Courage chapter to be established in Davao.
Marko shared that Courage helps individuals rediscover their true identity as children of God, not defined by labels like “bayot” or “tomboy.” He referenced the Gospel of Matthew, emphasizing Jesus’ call for mercy and conversion. Courage provides a safe space for individuals to heal through spiritual guidance, sacramental life, and reflection on scripture. Key to Courage’s approach is the involvement of priest chaplains who act as spiritual guides, offering compassionate listening during sharing meetings.
Courage members are expected to commit to chastity, humility, and charity, with regular activities such as Sacrament Sunday, Adoration, Reparation and Formation Sunday, and Sharing Meeting Sundays. These gatherings provide opportunities for spiritual growth, support, and accountability within a non-judgmental community. Mr. Weling also highlighted that Courage is available for parents, spouses, and family members of those with same-sex attraction, offering a broader network of understanding and care.
The event highlighted the role of the Church as a place of healing and reconciliation. Courage helps individuals navigate the challenges of same-sex attraction through prayer, psycho-spiritual formation, and a supportive community. The gathering concluded with a call to continue walking together in truth, compassion, and healing, knowing that individuals with same-sex attraction are not alone on their journey toward spiritual growth and holiness.
In this way, Lakbay Buhay… Lakbay Pag-asa was not only the culmination of Pro-Life Month but also a reminder of the Church’s loving response to those seeking transformation, rooted in faith and a deep connection with Christ. (Sem. Roldan Baliano)
