Safeguarding human lives and communities
In times of political differences and conflict of opinions, what is the role of the Church? How can the Church be faithful to her mandate from the Jesus Christ who built her foundation on the apostles? Where should we, as Church, stand?
We might have different expectations. These expectations may pressure even our local church leaders. But let us remember that each of us is a member of the Church. We all have a share of responsibility in safeguarding human lives and communities. Each one of us is accountable in making or breaking our human community.
“The Church, because of her commission and competence, is not to be confused in any way with the political community. She is both the sign and the safeguard of the transcendent character of the human person. The Church respects and encourages the political freedom and responsibility of the citizen” (CCC 2245).
“It is a part of the Church’s mission to pass moral judgments even in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man or the salvation of souls requires it. The means, the only means, she may use are those which are in accord with the Gospel and the welfare of all men according to the diversity of times and circumstances” (CCC 2246).
May our Blessed Mother of Hope, Mama Mary, intercede for all her children to cooperate not with man’s plan but of God’s.
