SPYA–Parish Youth Leaders Conference 2025: Chosen, Called, Committed

From May 24 to 26, 2025, the San Pablo Youth Apostolate held the Parish Youth Leaders Conference at the Regional Major Seminary. With the unwavering support of our Spiritual Youth Director, Rev. Fr. Junel Bustamante, and our Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Allan T. Rodriguez, the event gathered youth leaders from all 59 GKKs. It was a transformative experience that deepened our commitment to serve as leaders in our Church.

During his homily, Rev. Fr. Antonio Martin Basilio SJ, posed a profound question: “What does it take to be a leader?” He referenced the Gospel of John 15:18-21, where Jesus reminds His disciples that the world may hate them because they do not belong to it. This struck a chord with me. Being a youth leader isn’t always easy; I’ve faced criticism and challenging individuals. Yet, reflecting on Jesus’ words, I realized that even He, the perfect Son of God, faced hatred. This understanding reaffirmed that I am chosen to lead, not because it’s easy, but because He has called me to this path.

On the second day, Fr. Junel shared a message that moved me to tears: “Walay ni-higugma nga walay nasakitan.” He emphasized that true love is selfless, not expecting anything in return, and sometimes requires letting go and letting God. As a nursing student and a youth leader, I’ve encountered pain and obstacles. Letting go of someone I waited for over the years was heart-wrenching. But through this, I learned that unconditional love mirrors Christ’s love—selfless, enduring, and liberating.

Reflecting on the event, I am grateful for the bond within our core group. The sleepless nights and tireless preparations were worth it. I appreciate our Parish Priest and Spiritual Director for providing us the space to grow and for strengthening the youth’s role in the Church.

May we continue to pray for the youth, that they recognize their purpose as both the present and future of our Church and chapels. Let us be their safe haven amidst life’s struggles. Once again, PADAYON, SPYA! (Sophia Beatrice V. Sison | Assistant Formation Head, SPYA)
