Advent: A Beautiful Time
It’s the beautiful time of the year once again as the Catholic church celebrates Advent. It’s the time for spiritual growth, prayer and preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
There are four Sundays of Advent, and the church focus on these themes: hope, peace, joy and love. Said themes are often symbolize by the lighting of candles on the Advent Wreath that represents the light of Christ.
On this first Sunday of advent, we light one of the three purple candles which represents hope. In our present time, we really need hope for ourselves as we face different challenges in our day to day lives. Likewise, we pray for hope that our country may be able to rise amidst the problems it is facing such as the rampant corruption in the government, among others. For those victims of earthquakes and typhoons may they continue to have hope despite the tragedy they’ve experience.
Another purple candle will be lighted on the second Sunday of advent and it symbolizes peace. May advent bring peace in our hearts as we repent and reflect on our past shortcomings. By doing this may we also have the heart to forgive ourself and others who have hurt us.
On the third Sunday of advent, we will light the pink candle that represents joy. As we prepare for the coming birth of Jesus it is only fitting that we celebrate with rejoicing. His birth brings so much joy because our savior is born. With Jesus birth we are redeemed from our sins.
The third purple candle is lighted on the fourth Sunday of advent that symbolizes love. The love of God is so great that He gave his only begotten Son that we may have eternal life as we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. As God loves us, may we also share this love not only to our family and friends but to those who are needy.
Lord Jesus, as we prepare for your birth may we have a hopeful, peaceful, loving and joyful hearts. Enlighten us to have a meaningful celebration that we may not only think of ourselves but also help those needing of love and care. This we pray in Jesus’s name through the intercession of our dear Mother Mary, Amen.
“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight paths for him.” – Matthew 3:3
