Nine Days Toward the Manger: Archdiocese of Davao’s beautiful tradition of the 9-Day Misa de Gallo
Starting December 16, in the soft glow of dawn, long before the city fully awakens, the Archdiocese of Davao comes alive with a tradition that has shaped the heart of every Filipino Christmas: Misa de Gallo. Across parishes and Gagmay’ng Kristohanong Katilingban (GKKs), the faithful step out into the cold December air, guided by the familiar ringing of church bells and the gentle hum of devotion that has been handed down through generations. For many Dabawenyos, these nine early morning Masses are more than just a countdown to Christmas, these are days of a sacred journey of faith, hope, and joyful anticipation.
Deeply rooted in Filipino spirituality, the Misa de Gallo carries a significance unique to our culture. In the Archdiocese of Davao, we particularly honor and recognize Mama Mary, as the Mother of Jesus. Each dawn becomes an offering of gratitude and trust, mirroring Mary’s own “yes” to God. As the community gathers, her quiet courage and unwavering faith are remembered, honored, and imitated by those who, like her, seek to walk with God despite life’s uncertainties.
In countless parishes and GKK chapels whether nestled in the bustling heart of the city or standing in the peaceful outskirts the families arrive hand in hand. Children wrapped in jackets, elders carrying candles, parents guiding their little ones: these moments become living testimonies of how Misa de Gallo binds the family in prayer. What begins as a simple effort to wake before sunrise becomes a shared encounter with grace. The sight of entire families filling pews as early as 3:00 am. is a reminder that faith, when practiced together, becomes a powerful bond that outlives seasons.
This treasured tradition also transforms communities into places of warmth and welcome. After Mass, familiar scents of local delicacies namely puto maya, sikwate, suman, bibingka fill the surroundings. Neighbors greet each other with sleepy smiles and heartfelt wishes, renewing friendships and strengthening the sense of belonging that lies at the heart of the local church. In these early hours, the Archdiocese becomes a mosaic of joy: people from all walks of life united by faith and the promise of Christmas.
As the nine days draw closer to Christmas Eve, hearts become lighter, prayers become deeper, and the anticipation of Christ’s birth becomes more vivid. Misa de Gallo in the Archdiocese of Davao is not just a liturgical tradition but it is a celebration of community, a tribute to Mary’s love, and a cherished time when families come together to prepare their hearts for the gift of Emmanuel, God-with-us. In every dawn that breaks, the faithful discover once more that the true meaning of Christmas begins in prayer, in sacrifice, and in a love shared with one another.
