The Secret Within: Discovering God’s Answer Through Prayer
The Gospel reading last October 18, 2025 (Luke 18:1–8) reminded me of the animated film Kung Fu Panda. At first glance, connecting a Gospel passage about the importance of persistence in prayer with a comedy about a clumsy panda becoming a kung fu master might seem unusual. However, one particular scene, the final battle between the panda and the antagonist over the sacred scroll, sparked a deeper reflection in me.
In the story, everyone was curious about the scroll’s contents, believing it held the secret to becoming a true kung fu master. When the villain finally obtained it, he discovered, to his dismay, that the scroll was blank. Thinking the legend was a lie, he threw it away. Later, when the panda picked it up and looked closely, he saw his own reflection on its shiny surface. At that moment, he realized the real secret: there was no hidden formula or special power. Mastery comes from within, and true strength lies in believing in oneself.
That scene led me to reflect on three important lessons about persistence and mystery in prayer.
1. The Answers We Seek Are Often Within Us
Sometimes, the answers to our prayers are not far away; they are within us. When I pray for my loved ones and ask God to grant the desires of their hearts, I sometimes feel a quiet voice reminding me that I can be part of the answer. For instance, when I prayed for my sister’s dream of living abroad, her application was eventually approved, but she needed financial help to process the documents. That was when I realized that God had answered the prayer, but He was also calling me to be part of His response. I became an instrument of His will.
2. True Prayer Is Listening
There is a saying that true prayer is not just speaking to God but listening to what He is telling us. Often, our prayers follow a pattern of constant requests for something good, comforting, or meaningful to us or our loved ones. There is nothing wrong with that, especially when the prayer is sincere and heartfelt.
However, as we continue to pray and meditate on our deepest desires, a quiet transformation happens. God slowly clears our vision and directs us toward the answer, which often leads us back to ourselves.
I prayed earnestly for good health for my family. Over time, opportunities appeared that encouraged me to include them in my physical fitness routines such as morning runs on weekends, fun runs, and healthy food choices. Eventually, even extended family members joined and discovered the joy of running.
When I prayed for courage in facing professional challenges, God gave me opportunities to practice leadership through coaching and relationship-building rather than focusing only on tasks. It was a mystery I could not fully explain, as if God was reminding me, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways.”
Like the sacred scroll in Kung Fu Panda, I once thought the answers to my prayers would come from an external source. But I realized that most of the time, the answer lies within. What we need is humility to listen to His voice.
3. Prayer Is a Way of Living
Prayer life should not be confined to literally locking ourselves in a room every time we pray, as Matthew 6:6 teaches: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.” This verse reminds us not only to pray privately but also to live prayerfully.
Every activity, whether simple or complex, can become an expression of prayer if done wholeheartedly and with gratitude for the gifts God has given us. Sometimes, offering our time to listen to a friend or colleague who is struggling is already an act of prayer. In those moments, God reveals Himself and invites us to be part of another person’s answered prayer. At the same time, we are responding to His own answer to our prayers.
As the saying goes, “As you help another person, you are also helping yourself to improve in a certain aspect of life.” When I pray for generosity, for example, God gives me opportunities to practice it so that I may understand its deeper meaning in my life.
The Mystery of Prayer
This is the true mystery of prayer. It not only brings comfort when we are sad or weary, but it also connects us to humanity. Prayer invites us to serve, to love, and to help others discover God’s presence in their own lives. These experiences have shaped how I view prayer and service. Whenever someone asks for help, I pause and ask myself what God might be teaching me through the situation, perhaps charity, compassion, or patience.
Developing and maintaining a prayerful life is never easy. It resembles the panda’s journey toward mastery, full of challenges, distractions, and moments of discouragement. Sometimes, prayer becomes routine, recited without reflection. Yet true prayer requires persistence and depth. God’s answers rarely come instantly; they unfold through a process that teaches endurance, humility, and selflessness.
In the grand scheme of life, as we reach for that “scroll” representing our limited understanding, we must open it with faith and allow God’s voice to speak to our hearts. Persistent prayer, deep reflection, and humility open the way for His grace to move within us.
Ultimately, God does not need elaborate words. He only asks for a humble heart that is ready to listen, to trust, and to respond. (Francis Manayan)
