Preparing My Heart for Lent
As the season of Lent approaches, I am reminded that preparing for it is more than following traditions or attending church activities. It is about preparing my heart and being honest with myself. Lent gives me the chance to slow down and reflect on how I live my daily life, especially in moments when I act without thinking. This season encourages me to pause, reflect, and allow myself to grow spiritually.
One of the biggest realizations I have is that what I need to change most is my attitude. There are times when I become impatient, easily irritated, or proud, especially when I feel stressed or overwhelmed. Lent challenges me to be more aware of these behaviors and to work on being calmer, more understanding, and humbler. Letting go of a bad attitude is not easy, but I believe it is a meaningful sacrifice that can help me become a better person.
Aside from changing my attitude, Lent also reminds me to be more sincere with my actions. Simple things like choosing kind words, listening more, and responding with patience can already make a difference. These small efforts may seem simple, but they reflect a heart that is willing to change. Through prayer and reflection, I hope to become more mindful of how my actions affect the people around me.
As I go through the Lenten season, I hope to carry these changes beyond just forty days. Lent teaches me that true sacrifice is not only about giving something up, but about becoming someone better. By working on my attitude and choosing love over frustration, I hope to grow closer to God and become more compassionate in my everyday life. (Ashley Crumb, ACD Immersionist)
