Tagbilaran’s new bishop: ‘I’m unworthy, but God’s grace will guide me’

Bishop-elect Gerardo Saco Jr. on Wednesday said he accepted his appointment not as a pursuit of prestige but as a mission of love and service.

Speaking at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary chapel on the evening of his appointment, he described the episcopal office as a call to guide, care for, and serve the faithful.

“Truly, I am unworthy. I am lacking in many aspects, but like many whom God has called before me, I trust that His grace is sufficient,” Saco said.

He recounted his initial fear and confusion when informed of his appointment by apostolic nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown, asking for time to pray and discern.

During reflection, he said it became clear that the call came from the Lord, who would provide strength and grace to fulfill the mission.

“I accept not because I am capable but because I believe that God can work even through my weakness.” Saco said.

The bishop-elect urged the laity to pray that he may be a shepherd who strengthens the weak, draws people closer to Christ, and fosters unity.

Addressing the clergy, he expressed gratitude for their support and called for collaboration to build a Church of love, hope, and steadfast service.

“Let us all help each other for the development of our Church, that we remain strong in faith, filled with love and hope,” he said.

Pope Leo XIV appointed Saco as the new shepherd of Tagbilaran on March 25. The diocese has been “sede vacante” since Archbishop Alberto Uy’s transfer to the Archdiocese of Cebu in September 2025.

Prior to his appointment, the 60-year old priest has been serving as diocesan administrator of Tagbilaran. (CBCP News)
