A Tribute to Mary and to All Mothers
Humankind attributes its existence through the husband and wife in the family. Both of them have their distinctive roles to play.
In this occasion, we are highlighting the role played by the wives who become mothers. The appreciation of such role becomes easier for us because God the Father so lovingly permitted a 14 year-old lady to become the mother of our Saviour Jesus Christ. In praying to her for intercession, we readily remember the qualities of a model mother.
A wife becomes a mother out of love. When she bears a child in her womb, she fondly recalls the love which accompanies the child and welcomes the pain which accompanies the birth of the child. The birth in the manger is vivid of such loving event.
When the child grows up, the mother is aware of the child’s development and condition. We recall the 5th Joyful Mystery of Joseph and Mary finding Jesus in the temple after three days of search. We, parents, experienced that too with sleepless nights when a child is not yet home on time. The joy in the heart of a mother surpasses the anger, anxiety, fear, frustration she may had harbored during the search.
As the child grows, trust in him or her should also be established. This needs patience and for us, mothers, this needs persistent believing until the child matures. In the wedding at Cana, our Mother Mary, trusted her Son to provide the wine during the wedding.
Mothers are mothers forever. Mother Mary, was at the foot of the cross when her Son died. We, mothers, do not cease to be mothers for as long as our children are still alive. Mother Mary showed that. Through thick and thin, we are there for our children and our families.
On the celebration of Mothers’ Day, we thank the Lord for our indispensable role as mothers and we constantly pray we live it according to His Holy Will.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death, Amen.
