1st Eucharistic Procession Assumption Parish to San Pedro Cathedral 2026

Bringing Christ in the Streets: 1st Solemn Eucharistic Procession from Our Lady of Assumption Parish to San Pedro Cathedral Held

Every year, the Catholic Church sets aside a Sunday to do something the world rarely sees anymore: to pause, to stop everything, to lift the Body of Christ, and to carry Him through the streets. Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

On the evening of June 7, 2026, the streets between Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and the historic San Pedro Cathedral were filled with candlelight and the quiet adoration of hundreds of Catholic faithful. What unfolded was more than a procession, but it was a declaration that Christ, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, belongs not only inside the church walls but in the very heart of the city.

To recall, last May 30, 2026, Davao Archbishop Romulo G. Valles issued Circular No. 27, Series of 2026, addressed to all parish priests, chaplains, and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Davao. In it, the Archbishop called for a common intention across the entire Archdiocese: to pray for peace in our country and in the world. Citing the difficult situation facing the Philippines and many nations, he encouraged all parishes to organize, where possible, a Holy Hour with Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and a Eucharistic Procession as a public witness of faith in the Eucharistic Lord. Our Lady of the Assumption Parish answered that call and then went a step further.

The parish, administered by the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (the SSS Fathers), had already been immersed in Eucharistic devotion since June 5, when it launched its 40-Hour Devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament under the theme, “Come, Let Us Adore Him.” Beginning with an Opening Mass at 12:00 noon on June 5, the continuous adoration stretched through two days and nights, concluding with a Solemn Benediction before the 6:00 AM Mass on the morning of June 7, on the very feast of Corpus Christi itself. By the time evening came, the parish had already spent forty hours on its knees before the Lord.

What made June 7 truly historic, however, was something that had never happened before. For the first time, Our Lady of the Assumption Parish formally coordinated with the mother church of the Archdiocese: the San Pedro Cathedral, to mount a single, unified Corpus Christi celebration. The bridge between the two was coordinated through Rev. Msgr. Paul Cuison, Rector of the San Pedro Cathedral, who extended the invitation to Archbishop Valles to preside over the 6:00 PM Solemn Pontifical Mass at the parish, which the Archbishop accepted.

The Mass drew hundreds of faithful, and the atmosphere was one of solemn joy and a deep awareness that the Body of Christ, broken and given, stands at the center of the Catholic life and worship. Following the Mass, Fr. Marlon Reyes, SSS, Parish Priest of Our Lady of the Assumption, led the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. In the tradition of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, whose very charism is perpetual adoration of the Eucharist, Fr. Reyes lifted the monstrance as the procession prepared to move.

And then the parish gates opened and Christ went out into the streets.

The Corpus Christi Solemn Eucharistic Procession moved from Our Lady of the Assumption Parish through the city streets toward San Pedro Cathedral. Clergy led the way, followed by religious men and women, liturgical ministers, and the faithful.

The procession arrived at the San Pedro Cathedral, where Archbishop Valles led the Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament – in which the monstrance is raised over the kneeling faithful. As the benediction concluded, the Cathedral filled with the closing song: O Maria Rayna sa Pilipinas, the beloved Filipino hymn honoting the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of the Philippines. It was a fitting close to an evening that began with the Body of Christ and ended with honor to the woman through whom that Body was given to the world.

Before the faithful dispersed, Archbishop Valles addressed the gathered crowd. He offered his gratitude to Fr. Marlon Reyes and the Blessed Sacrament Fathers for spearheading the event, to Msgr. Cuison anf the Cathedral for their partnership, and to every person who had walked the streets. Then he made an announcement: this will happen again. Every year. The same format starting with the Pontifical Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption, the procession through the streets, the Solemn Benediction at San Pedro Cathedral with the Archbishop presiding.

What was started last June 7 as a first-time collaboration between a parish and a cathedral has now been declared as an annual gathering in the liturgical life of the Archdiocese of Davao.
