Independence

Every nation dreams of independence. It finds its own identity by being independent. It wants freedom from anything that enslaves. But independence does not mean being isolated. Rather, it strengthens its capacity for a unique contribution for a better society, a better world.

What has become of us as a Filipino nation as we celebrated our independence day? Are we truly independent and free? Have we exercised our freedom as God’s gift for its purpose? “The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just” (CCC 1733).

Celebrating independence as a country must lead each one, especially our leaders, to true freedom from political enslavement. It should awaken in each one the call to be freed from self-serving interests. It should make us rather than break us a one Filipino nation.
