CATHOLIC MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY: Hope and Healing in Our Parish

“A reality we cannot ignore.” That’s how the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines described our nation’s mental health crisis. In their July 13, 2026 pastoral letter, our bishops reminded us: “If you are overwhelmed, exhausted, or lost — you are not alone. God loves you. He walks with us in our darkest moments, and the Church stands with us in compassion, prayer, and hope.”

That call is now being lived out in our Archdiocese of Davao. Since 2024, the Archdiocesan Episcopal Commission on Health Care has been organizing a Mental Health Ministry. A survey led by Fr. Zeus Jardin, DCD reached nearly 50% of our GKKs, and the message was clear: our communities need care, understanding, and accompaniment.

Last April 18–19, 2026, 37 lay leaders and clergy completed a Training for Trainers Seminar-Workshop. We are bringing this formation closer to the ground — to you, to our parish, to our homes.

Why does this matter? Mental illness is not “out there.” It is in our pews. 1 in 5 adults faces mental illness each year. 50% of conditions begin by age 14. Studies show the #1 place people turn to for help is their faith community. Yet too many still experience stigma, shame, and silence — even in church, the place meant to heal.

As ministers, we do not diagnose or treat. Professionals do that. Our sacred role is to listen without judgment, pray with compassion, walk with those who suffer, and connect them to proper care. The Bishops of California put it simply: “Christ calls us to attend to those who suffer and provide hope and healing.”

The Archdiocesan Mental Health Team is new, but our mission is urgent. With the support of our parish priests and every willing heart, we can be a sanctuary of hope.
