Embracing the Mother’s Love

Archdiocese of Davao Unites in Faith for the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego

DAVAO CITY — The Archdiocese of Davao was enveloped in an extraordinary wave of grace, deep prayer, and heartfelt devotion as it hosted the historic visit of the international pilgrim image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Saint Juan Diego from July 27 to 29, 2026.

Drawing thousands of devotees from all walks of life, the momentous three-day gathering allowed the faithful of Davao to experience the powerful presence of the Patroness of the Americas right in their homeland, bridging the miles between Mexico and Mindanao as the nation journeys toward the 500th anniversary of the miraculous 1531 apparitions.

At the center of the pilgrimage was the profound story of the miracle at Tepeyac Hill, beautifully highlighted by the presence of both Our Lady and Saint Juan Diego. Pilgrims stood in awe before the image of the humble indigenous peasant whose steadfast obedience and pure heart made him the vessel for the miraculous imprint of the Blessed Virgin Mary on his tilma (cactus-cloak).

For the Davaoeño faithful, the presence of St. Juan Diego served as a powerful testament that God works through the ordinary and the lowly. As devotees lined up for hours of quiet prayer and public veneration, the atmosphere inside the cathedral resonated with Mama Mary’s timeless, comforting promise to Juan Diego: “Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”

Parishioners and the GSLs who witnessed the event felt blessed and loved while seeing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in person. Reflecting on her encounter, Kyla Jadulco shared, “I feel so blessed and emotional pagkakita, pagkaduol, ug pagkagunit nako saiya, once in a lifetime gyud ni nga opportunity na ang image ni Mama Guadalupe from Mexico is makastay diri sa Davao and I had a chance na magunitan and makapray in front of her!!”

A unique and inspiring hallmark of Davao’s hosting of the pilgrimage was the vibrant unity displayed across the local ecclesial community. The celebration truly belonged to the entire Archdiocese, with the different vicariates taking turns leading and gathering for the Holy Eucharist.

Priests, religious leaders, Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), and lay faithful from various parishes and chapels filled the cathedral daily. Each scheduled Eucharistic celebration offered by the vicariates became a profound spiritual milestone uniting families and communities in shared prayer for peace, family strengthening, and spiritual renewal under the maternal mantle of the Blessed Mother.

As the pilgrim image concludes its time in the Archdiocese of Davao and journeys onward to the next diocese, the impact of these three sacred days remains deeply etched in the hearts of the faithful. The overwhelming turnout, the solemn Eucharistic liturgies, and the shared tears of petition and thanksgiving proved once again that the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is vibrantly alive in Mindanao. The graces received during this historic visit will undoubtedly continue to bear fruit, inspiring Davaoeños to walk closer in faith, emulate the humility of Saint Juan Diego, and live out the Gospel message of love and service.
