Archbishop of Davao Endorses 4th HCDC Choral Competition and Tribute to Narcisa “Nars” Fernandez

DAVAO CITY — The Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., Archbishop of Davao and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), has warmly endorsed the 4th HCDC Choral Competition: 75th Diamond Jubilee Edition and Tribute to Narcisa “Nars” Fernandez. The event is scheduled for September 17, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at the HCDC Gymnasium.

In his official endorsement dated August 27, 2026, Archbishop Valles encouraged the participation and support of parishes, Basic Ecclesial Communities, Catholic schools, religious communities, lay organizations, and choirs across the DaDiTaMa Subregion (Davao, Digos, Tagum, and Mati). Describing the event as a “meaningful celebration of music, faith, and community,” he called on regional Catholic communities to gather for this special occasion.

The competition continues the tribute to Narcisa “Nars” Fernandez, an icon of Filipino liturgical music. It follows the tribute concert, Adlaw nga Halandumon, held on August 21, 2026, which celebrated her life and enduring contributions to the musical heritage of the Church in the Philippines.

A centerpiece of the competition is Fernandez’s composition, “Huni sa Kinabuhi,” which serves as the official contest piece. Participating choirs will have the opportunity to interpret and celebrate the richness of local music through her work.

The event forms part of the 75th Diamond Jubilee of Holy Cross of Davao College, anchored on the theme “Ex Fide Ad Veritatem: 75 Years of Grace and Onwards: A Blazing Mission.” As an Archdiocesan institution, HCDC remains committed to promoting faith formation, Christian education, and the cultural heritage of the local Church.

Archbishop Valles expressed his hope that communities across the region will join in making the event a fitting tribute to Fernandez and a joyful expression of shared faith.

The 4th HCDC Choral Competition is open to the public. Through this gathering, HCDC and the Archdiocese of Davao celebrate the power of music to unite communities, deepen faith, and preserve the country’s sacred traditions.
