Bishops warn faithful about groups using Catholic identity
MANILA — Two central Philippine bishops have warned Catholics about religious groups they said could cause confusion by using Catholic names, terminology or clerical attire.
Bishop Julito Cortes of Dumaguete warned against individuals soliciting money while identifying themselves as “Romano Catolicos” and using the name Simbahang Catolico Pilipino Inc.
In an Oct. 6 circular, Cortes said the group’s solicitation letter listed an address in Panag, New Bataan, Davao de Oro.
Archbishop Romulo Valles of Davao, after consulting the Diocese of Tagum, confirmed that the group is not affiliated with any Catholic parish or recognized by either diocese, Cortes said.
He urged Catholics to report further solicitations using the group’s name to their parish priest or diocesan chancery, preferably with copies of the solicitation documents.
“Let us remain steadfast in communion with the one Church of Christ, and let our generosity be marked by discernment as well as by compassion,” Cortes said.
In Eastern Samar province, Bishop Crispin Varquez of Borongan separately warned Catholics about the Apostolic Catholic Church, also known as Apostolika’t Katolikang Simbahang or Simbahang Apostolika Katolika.
Varquez republished a June 25, 2025, diocesan circular on Oct. 5, saying the group had entered several barangays in Borongan and communities in Guiuan, a town in the province’s south.
He described the group as non-Catholic and said confusion had arisen because its ministers wear attire resembling that of Catholic clergy.
“In the face of religious diversity, it is important that we remain strong in our convictions and deepen our understanding of our Catholic faith,” Varquez said.
While recognizing the group’s right to practice its religion, the bishop urged Catholics not to attend its sacramental celebrations, particularly the Eucharist.
He also asked Catholics not to allow their chapels or parish churches to be used for the group’s sacraments or related activities.
“We must educate ourselves about the teachings of the Church while embracing the richness of our Catholic traditions,” Varquez said. (CBCP News)
